Life is inherently risky. Unfortunately, there are very few rewards or interesting endeavors that come to us without some level of risk. Driving is inherently risky but the rewards far outweigh the risks. That's why most of us drive. When we drive, we are vulnerable to poorly trained drivers, inexperienced drivers, fatigued drivers, tired drivers, distracted drivers, stressed drivers, impaired drivers (alcohol, drugs, disabilities, aged, sickness, bad weather, etc.), random events and freak accidents. In the interest of fairness, alcohol is really no better or worse than any of the other vulnerabilities listed above. In each case, death is just as tragic and injury just as regrettable. The best defense against all of these vulnerabilities is good defensive driving. Expect the driver of each vehicle you meet to make a deadly mistake. This is a powerful tool for avoiding tragedy yourself. Let's learn to be good defensive drivers instead of persecuting people who enjoy moderate social drinking.
